Term 2 has started with a bang, some terrible weather, but our rooms are warm and dry and there is great learning happening in each class. A major focus for Term 2 will be preparation for our production at the end of this term.
While our Kōwhai class farewelled Whaea Ange at the end of Term 1, we are now welcoming Sara Malo as their new teacher.
Homework Club is starting again this week, Wednesday afternoons, 3-4:00pm.
We also have students headed to a football tournament on Thursday and a few more weeks it will be our interschool cross-country at Porirua Park.

Our attendance data for Term 1 showed 63% of students attended at the expected level 90%+. Research shows that when attendance drops below 90% there is also a drop in achievement as too much learning is being missed. Students who are regularly absent not only miss school work, they also miss their friends, and some of the opportunities to participate in extra curricular activities.
The Health New Zealand website has information on when a child is well enough to attend school and if you need any additional support please contact our office.

“Homework Passports” were sent home in Term 1, there is no rush, they are designed to be worked on over the whole year. We encourage all students to work on completing all of the tasks to earn a great trip in November, juniors to Jumparama and seniors to Adrenalin Forest. The only way to earn a place on these trips to return their fully completed passport and workbook to the Principal to sight and sign off.
If you would like any worksheets or materials to support your child’s goals please check with their classroom teacher.

Displays in our rooms to support literacy: alphabet and sounds, days of the week and months of the year, interesting vocabulary and plot patterns. These are all ways to build skills in reading.

As the cost of fuel has increased dramatically we would like to support whānau to minimise the costs of transport to school.
We encourage where possible that students walk, scoot or bike to school. Or if using cars look to car pool with other nearby whānau. We would be happy to connect you with others, could save costs and build connections for students and parents.

This year we have numbered the Growbeds and each class has their own bed. It’s been exciting to see each class assess their beds, weed the unwanted plants out and grow seeds to plant in the beds. Some classes have planted too many seeds & we have used these in other Growbeds. Our seniors’ focus this term is on Companion Planting so that plants grow better & healthier and also to ward off nasty bugs that eat our kai. In the afternoons, this year has also seen the Juniors having their own Growbeds too. It has been fun watching them master their left & right gloves and putting them on to work in the gardens. Their focus is Helpful Insects which we will do Term 1 & part of Term 2. We have had a bumper apple & pear harvest and most classes have benefited by either juices or compote & yoghurt or apple crumble. Our compost is finally ready and Pipi has the honour of moving the compost to their own Growbed – heaps of earthworms means great compost for the plants. We also had a visit from Garden to Table co-ordinators & members from all over Wellington; including Porirua City council. Can you help? We are looking for any adult help on Thursdays, (no gardening knowledge needed) from 9:15 – 11 am or till 12:00 if you’d like to join us for a snack. This can be a one off, or regularly on Thursdays (during the school term). Contact me for enquiries: gdevilliers@cannonscreek.school.nz Garden to Table teacher@ Cannons Creek School.
