Principal’s Message

Kia ora

We are back into the action for Term 3, our Te Kiwa Nui group are working very hard perfecting their performance, ready for the show to be held at Te Rauparaha Arena (5 August, second session). Tickets are available online.

We have welcomed two new teachers, Benin Kadhim in Mokomoko and Sophia Turner in Tuna. We will be holding our parent -teacher interviews Korero Mai, Korero Atu on Tuesday 12 August this is a great chance to come along and hear about your child’s progress.

We noted an increase in fizzy drinks and other junk food at the end of last term so starting this term we are really encouraging water only. Students with fizzy or other high sugar drinks will be asked to put it away for the day and have it when they get home. We find students are better able to focus and learn for the full day when drinking water only. We encourage students to have their own water bottle, with a sipper lid to limit spillage.

CARE Values

He tangata takahi manuhiri,

he marae puehu.

“A person who mistreats his guest has a dusty Marae”

This is a whakatauki that embodies our third CARE value of respect.

We encourage students to demonstrate respect for people, property and themselves.

Attendance

We have started a weekly award for students who have had perfect attendance for the previous week. They get to keep the tuna, Cressie, for the week.

How to support learning at home.

You can help your child’s learning every day by supporting and encouraging them, and being excited by their learning. Here are some ideas to help them further develop their literacy and numeracy skills at home.

Garden to Table

Every Thursday, Cannons Creek School runs a Garden to Table programme where children learn to garden (including sowing and planting, and also harvesting fruit and vegetables) and develop their skills to prepare and cook the food.  The children then dine together to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

If you have free time on a Thursday we would like volunteers to support our work both in the garden and kitchen.

On the last Thursday of Term 2,  these Kowhai kids were the Garden to Table cooks.  They enjoyed trying their hand at making scone-based pizza (recipe below).  Some of their favourite experiences that day were measuring the flour and other ingredients, kneading the dough, grating the cheese, and one even loved washing the dishes.

Ingredients for pizza base

3 ½ cups Self-Raising Flour

1 cup cream

1 cup Sprite or Soda Water

1 tsp salt

Pepper

1. Preheat oven to 200. Line a tray with baking paper.

2. Combine the flour, salt, pepper, and baking powder in a bowl and whisk to combine.  Make a well in the center and pour the cream and soda water.  Mix until combined. 10-15 turns with a spatula.

Do not over-mix, it will make the scones dense! The dough should be soft and fairly sticky.

3. Turn out onto a floured surface, and knead gently just 3 – 5 times to bring the dough together, then use a floured rolling pin and roll it into a large rectangle or circle.

4. Spread pizza sauce over the scone.  Sprinkle with ingredients of your choice. Finally, top the pizza with lots of cheese and bake for 15-20 minutes.

5. When pizza is baked,  cool slightly, then cut and serve.

You could sprinkle some thyme, drizzle BBQ sauce, or anything you like.
